Herbert Johnson was born at Salderdon on 18 June 1986, the son of Hannah Johnson of East Wood, Nottinghamshire. A professional soldier prior to the Great War he was posted to the B.E.F. at its outbreak. Entering the war in France on 13 August 1914 it was not long before Johnson and the rest of the army saw action at the Battle of Mons on 23 August. As the British withdrew from Mons a number of fierce rearguard actions saw many prisoners taken. One of these was Johnson who is listed as a prisoner of war the day after the Battle on 24 August. He was not to see freedom again until the end of the war.
