John Eddleston enlisted in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment on 16 March 1901 and served during the Boer War with the 1st Battalion, attached Mounted Infantry. Remaining with the 1st Battalion, he disembarked in France on 27 August 1914 and witnessed the First Battle of Langemarck from 21-24 October 1914. Doggedly holding their ground, the British regular soldiers succeeded in preventing the enemy from capturing Ypres, taking a bloody toll on the waves of young and inexperienced German volunteer infantrymen. A week later, Eddleston and his comrades were deployed to Gheluvelt in an attempt to plug a gap in the line; their efforts proved successful, but Eddleston was discharged as medically unfit on 9 December 1914, likely exhausted from his endeavours.
